The Night Shift (Little Barrier Island in the Harbour of Venice)
2003
‘The Night Shift’ works arose out of an enormous project - to transfer Little Barrier Island from the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland, New Zealand, to the harbour of Venice on the other side of the world.
The exhibition these works were from contained a series of blue-print plans, large photographs and a computer animation of the island featuring Bizumic’s latest soundtrack. Set aside as a nature reserve in 1894, Little Barrier Island (Hauturu in Maori) has been described as the most important conservation island in the world in recognition of the wide range of rare bird species which inhabit its rugged forests. The artists took photographs on the island using a photo-cinematic process called ‘day for night’. The blueprint plans were mental maps designed to establish the conceptual underlying structure behind the project.
The computer animation shows an animated representation of the shift from a harbour in the Southern Hemisphere to one in the Northern Hemisphere.
