Installation, 2009, Bartley + Company art, Gallery entrance, Wellington
Bartley + company art gallery note: Like much of Browne’s work ‘Red words’ has multiple references and readings - it plays off abstract painting, conceptual art and popular culture drawing from the Neil Young line - ‘purple words on a grey background’ in the song ‘Cowgirls in the sand’ and references the work of American conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner who currently has a major retrospective exhibition at the Whitney Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Margriet Windhausen

Young Woman (Red)
Polychrome, terracotta
2008
Whitespace Gallery, Auckland showed the work of Dutch artists Paul van den Bergh and Margriet Windhausen in 2009. Paul and Margriet both were originally from the Netherlands, Paul has trained at the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht and the National Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam where he honed his painting craft. Margriet, a sculptor, trained at the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht. Both artists have established careers in their respective fields in New Zealand with works featuring in various exhibitions throughout the country from the National Gallery in Wellington, Gisborne Museum and Art Gallery, Waikato Museum as well as various public and private collections in New Zealand and the Netherlands. As a painter, van den Bergh’s work is reminiscent of the early 20th century Paris school with a style complimentary of the likes of Picasso and Matisse. This early modern European influence is also pertinent in Windhausen’s sculptures with the spirit of Rodin and Brancusi permeating her work.
