Chris Heaphy was born in Palmerston North, New Zealand, in 1965. He completed a BFA in Painting in 1991 at Canterbury School of Fine Arts, Christchurch.
In 1998 he gained an MFA in Painting at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. Heaphy received Te waka Toi grants in 1993 and 1994 in New Zealand and was awarded the Olivia Spencer Bower Fellowship in 1995. In 1998 he received a research grant from the Waikato Polytechnic, Hamilton, New Zealand, which enabled him to travel and undertake a residency in Melbourne. He received two Creative New Zealand grants in 1999 and in 2000-2001 he undertook a residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris. He was awarded a residency at Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin in Champagne in 2001.
Heaphy has exhibited widely since 1993 including shows in New Zealand, Australia and Europe, and has worked included in major public and private collections in New Zealand. He lives in Auckland and lectures in Painting at Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland, New Zealand.
