Oestrogen Overdrive
Lauren Lysaght's Tiara, in the Auckland Art Gallery's exhibition
Flaunt: Art/Fashion/Culture, quietly speaks volumes about the feminist confrontation. In this small work, made from hormone replacement therapy pills embedded within resin and shaped into a tiara, Lysaght opens the debate that Beauty and/is the Beast. As a symbol of ornamentation, extravagance, virginal beauty and privilege, the tiara affords the wearer the grace to be worshipped as a Goddess. But as every Cinderella knows, it does not last, and eventually the clock WILL strike midnight and while the footmen rapidly turn back into mice, the jewels in the dream-tiara turn into HRT pills -the dream becomes instead a nightmare. On until 8 February 2004 and curated by Mary Kisler, Jane Davidson and Laura Jocic, Flaunt looks at fashion in a number of contexts. Always fascinating are the bodices and lavish dresses that date from an era of hourglass figures and quaint, mannered behaviour. All I can see (and almost feel) is the agony and anxiety that is coupled with this notion of beauty and kept hidden beneath the petticoats and restrained by stays.
Anxiety couched within objects of perceived comfort arises again in another work of Lysaght's at the Aotea Centre in the Framework Trust exhibition, Choices not Stigma which will travel around New Zealand as part of Mental Health Awareness campaigns. The work consists of an institutional tea trolley loaded with plastic hospital-green teacups. Each cup and saucer combination has been transformed by the addition of plastic eyes into a silent, cute creature. Overseeing it all is a giant menacing bird made from the same tea-ware attached to the trolley. Lysaght's accompanying notes refer to teatime in an institution such as a mental health unit when the much craved- for tea, comfort and potential social contact is coupled by the anxiety of timetables, regimes, structure and conformity. "And the tea is always cold by the time it gets to you anyway," she writes. Lysaght is one of 38 artists selected to participate in The 2nd Auckland Triennial: PUBLIC/PRIVATE Tumatanui/Tumataiti, from 20 March - 30 May 2004, at the Auckland Art Gallery and associated venues.
