Pat Hanly
The New Zealand artist Pat Hanly passed away on September 20th, 2004. Born in 1932 in Palmerston North, Pat Hanly spent a large part of his life in Mt Eden, Auckland. The Auckland Art Gallery honoured Pat with a public event when old friend and fellow art student from the 1950s Hamish Keith spoke about Pat's time as a student in Christchurch; friend and fellow artist Barry Lett spoke about Pat's involvement with the Barry Lett Galleries, one of Auckland's first dealer galleries which was established in the mid 1960s until the mid 1970s, and curator Alexa Johnston also spoke of her experiences of working with Pat.
There are several works of Hanly's in the Chartwell Collection. One major work, Who Am I, 1973, oil on board, was acquired in the Collection's inaugural year, 1974. It joined a growing body of works by other major New Zealand artists acquired by the collection at the time.
