Bill Culbert

Chartwell is saddened to learn of the passing of artist Bill Culbert in March 2019. Bill exhibited at Chartwell's Centre for Contemporary Art, in Hamilton, New Zealand, along with Ralph Hotere, in 1992 and Chartwell holds significant works in the Collection. One of these works, Light Plain, 1997, was shown in a major Chartwell exhibition at The Dowse, in Lower Hutt, in 2013. Bill spoke about the work at the time saying that he recalled that Paula Savage, then director of City Gallery Wellington, figured out where he could get the 278 identical lightshades he needed for the ambitious large scale work. Then Director of The Dowse wrote in a blog post "People tilted their heads up in wonder and basked in the warmth of the incandescent lights. It was one of those heart stopping moments that you live for when you work in a place like this."
